What's your house like?

Postby biscuit » Thu Jun 04, 2009 8:55 pm

I'm a curious sort of a person (or an inquisitive idiot, if you will), and today I'm wondering how you all live. What's your house like? (I knicked this off of facebook, so some of you may recognise it. Copy, paste, etc) I'll start:)

1. When you step in through the front door into your home and look to the left, what do you see?
Coats and jackets hanging on the wall and heaps of shoes on the floor.

2.What colour is the rug/carpet in your living room?
I don't have a carpet. Hard wood floors for me:)

3. When you look out of your kitchen window, what do you see?
My front door, the steps and my garage. Bikes in summer, sleighs in winter.

4. What items do you keep on the washbasin ledge in your toilet/bathroom?
Soap dispenser, toothbrush jar, several tubes of toothpaste, make-up, hairbands, lotions...way too much stuff!

5. What room in your home is the cosiest?
I have to say my living room:)

6.What is the most charming feature of your home?
The ceiling is slightly lower on the ground floor which makes it seem snug and cosy.

7. What kind of home appeals to you the most? (Flat, house, terraced house...)
I live in a detached house and I much prefer that to flats. I like my space.

8. Where do you store your vacuum cleaner?
It varies... In the hall or on the landing usually.

9. Are you satisfied with your home decor?
It's ok but we are always planning something new.

10. Is there anything in your home that needs a bit of doing up?Yup. The floor in the living room which is damaged by the previous owner's dogs. The kitchen could use some work too.

11. Do you have more posters or more framed pictures/paintings on your walls?
A few framed pictures and a painting.

12. Do you make your bed every morning?
Nope.

13. What do you have in your bathroom cupboard?
Cosmetics. Medicine.

14. What do you keep in the cupboard underneath the washbasin?

Towels.

15. What do you have in your pantry/food cupboard?
I'm not good at stocking up on things but I usually have flour and sugar and things I need for baking. I'm a horrible cook but a great baker:)

16.What do you always have in your fridge?
Milk and juice...and ketchup. What?? I have kids!

17. What is your bed like?
A king-size double bed.

18. What kind of curtains/drapes do you have?
Venetian blinds in the kitchen and the bedroom and panel curtains, off white with black 60s-ish graphics, in the living room.

19. What do you have on your fridge door?
Magnets, time tables and kids' drawings.

20. What kind of decorative items/ornaments do you have on display?
A couple of glass bowls, some African carved animals. I'm not big on ornaments.

21. Any photos on display?
One framed poster with photos from a family holiday:)

22. What feature in your home is likely to get your guests' attention first?
Hopefully not the messy hall :-p Maybe the cosy living room? (A girl can dream, can't she?)

23. What would you like to buy for your home some day?
An extension

24. Any plants or flowers in your home?
One. It may be some sort of mutant plant seeing as it has survived in my house. I kill plants!

25. What are you most embarrassed about your home?
I'm not the tidiest of people....

Sloping ceilings on the top floor, and Freanch doors out to garden (not from the top floor)

1. When you step in through the front door into your home and look to the left, what do you see?
The living room, generally messy with kids toys and dvds strewn all over, although I will sometimes pick all that up if someone is coming over.

2.What colour is the rug/carpet in your living room?
yellowish-brown in living room, needs to be replaced, the family room has hard wood floors

3. When you look out of your kitchen window, what do you see?
A little bit of backyard, and lots and lots of woods. Sometimes I see deer and in the fall I see lots of wild turkeys. Once this last fall I saw a wild Tom turkey with all its feathers fanned out strutting around. Wish I had my camera ready.

4. What items do you keep on the washbasin ledge in your toilet/bathroom?
The usual stuff, toothpaste, toothbrush, deoderant, perfume, earrings, etc. (I really should put it underneath or in the drawer but I'm too lazy.)

5. What room in your home is the cosiest?
Depends on my mood. Sometimes it's the living room, sometimes the three season porch, sometimes my bedroom. All have nice views of the woods.

6.What is the most charming feature of your home?
I like the three season porch. We also have a Vermont Stove (woodstove) which is cozy in the winter, and was absolutely necessary during this past winters ice storm (no heat, water, or electricity for 8 days!!)

7. What kind of home appeals to you the most?

With kids, a house with lots of rooms and a yard seems really necessary. I like having my space.

8. Where do you store your vacuum cleaner?
It should go in the closet on the first floor, but normally its just standing in the hallway.

9. Are you satisfied with your home decor?
The people who sold it to us did a good job. We really haven't done anything. However, I do hate the color of my bedroom. It's a dark dusty rose, and I think it needs something lighter. I want to just paint it white or cream (but I've been saying that for the last 3 years.)

10. Is there anything in your home that needs a bit of doing up?

Everything it seems. Outside could use some paint. I need new windows. New carpet would be nice too. I have some planters at the end of the driveway that I would like to put some flowers in. Right now they do have plants, but they look more like weeds.

11. Do you have more posters or more framed pictures/paintings on your walls?

Mostly framed pictures and pictures of kids.

12. Do you make your bed every morning?

Most of the time I actually do because often I like to do my work on my bed. I can put my laptop on my lap, stretch out my legs, and spread out papers next to me. I have a home office too, but rarely work there because I hate sitting at a desk.

13. What do you have in your bathroom cupboard?
Towels and blankets, some cleaning stuff

14. What do you keep in the cupboard underneath the washbasin?
Junk that I probably should throw out that I never use.

15. What do you have in your pantry/food cupboard?

Mac and cheese, canned clam chowder, various pasta, snacks, fruit cups

16.What do you always have in your fridge?

Milk, diet soda, sandwich meat, eggs

17. What is your bed like?

King size with a nothing special headboard

18. What kind of curtains/drapes do you have?
The people who sold it to us put up nice window treatments. I can't take any credit for those.

19. What do you have on your fridge door?
Magnets and pictures of kids, occasional coupon

20. What kind of decorative items/ornaments do you have on display?
Various Russian/Ukrainian stuff

21. Any photos on display?
Lots, kids, family, friends

22. What feature in your home is likely to get your guests' attention first?
Unfortunately, probably the dining room to the right of the front entrance that is used as the kids' playroom. It is out of control with toys, you often can't see the floor. I'm trying to figure out a system for that room, but haven't yet.

23. What would you like to buy for your home some day?
I would love to have a deck with a hottub, but that's probably just a dream.

24. Any plants or flowers in your home?
No, I accidentally kill every plant I ever get. The plants never tell me when to feed them. The cats tell me when to feed them, the kids tell me when to feed them, but the plants never do....and then they die. I have been collecting fake plants at the Freecycle section of our local dump, and they actually look fairly decent around the house.

25. What are you most embarrassed about your home?
I am really untidy. I am glad to hear I'm in like company! :D

Oooh! fun!

1. When you step in through the front door into your home and look to the left, what do you see?
Purple Futon, Purple Papason Chair, Square wicker hamper that I use as an otoman, Pumpkin colored border collie sitting on one of the purple chairs, Giant window that leads out to the balcony and nothing but trees. (Our apartment has a treehouse feel to it, all you see is treetops from windows)

2.What colour is the rug/carpet in your living room?
Red, ex roomie left it. Only reason it's not purple lol.

3. When you look out of your kitchen window, what do you see?
Nothing, cause there is no window. Balcony window is the closet window and like I said that's all tree tops.

4. What items do you keep on the washbasin ledge in your toilet/bathroom?
Toothbrush, assorted Burt's bees items, tea tree oil, body shop lotions/scrubs, toms of maine deodorant in woodspice

5. What room in your home is the cosiest?
Living room

6.What is the most charming feature of your home?
It's ability to grow mold lighting fast? Tons of dog hair? The fact that dishwasher tilts and nearly falls out of the cabinetry when you open it? hehehe

7. What kind of home appeals to you the most?
Log cabin or geodesic dome house with enough privacy that you could dance around naked in the yard if you wanted to. Not that I would do it, I just want to have the option of doing it and not have anyone be able to see me.

8. Where do you store your vacuum cleaner?
I have always *intended* to buy a vacuum cleaner...scouts honor! Wait! Can you use that if you've never been a scout? Anyways, there's this handy thing called roommates. They tend to have vacuum cleaners and if they don't have one, they tend to get one after they've lived with you a while after asking you about the lack of a vacuum a few times. Well, more than a few. Then the floor magically cleans itself while you're at work and you just don't have to worry about it. What?! lol

9. Are you satisfied with your home decor?
Not yet.

10. Is there anything in your home that needs a bit of doing up?
Probably everything. It's a very old apartment. Everything creaks and squeaks. The floors are warped, but I like that. It feels neat under barefoot feeling the raised bumps and the lower sunk in places when you walk.

11. Do you have more posters or more framed pictures/paintings on your walls?
Mostly my own art, and there's a few Tori Amos posters.

12. Do you make your bed every morning?
I just sleep with a couple throws over me. We don't really have the whole bedset thing, no comforter or anything, so there's not a way to really make the bed without it looking odd or mussy, so I don't bother.

13. What do you have in your bathroom cupboard?
Don't have one, darn it! Just have to pile stuff on a shelf above the toilet. Mostly that's towels, yoga journals, bodybutter stuff like that.

14. What do you keep in the cupboard underneath the washbasin?
toilet paper, epsom salt and necessary girly items

15. What do you have in your pantry/food cupboard?
Mac and cheese, popcorn, oatmeal, luna bars, sunflower seeds, pasta, basic stuff

16.What do you always have in your fridge?
Cheese, soda, fruit, juicy juice

17. What is your bed like?
It's a futon matress on the floor next to my dogs bed. My side has 3 pillows (one to keep my hip in socket, one to keep my shoulder elevated and a special water pillow from chiropractor) and some blankets cause I get cold.

18. What kind of curtains/drapes do you have?
Heavy purple embroidered velvet and purple and red sari type ones from pier one (yes my house does look like prince decorated it lol)

19. What do you have on your fridge door?
Assortment of dog theme magnets, one of ireland that a client I dogsat for gave me and various reminders of things I need to do. Also a self-made chart of what you can recycle in what bin that my roommate finds annoying lol.

20. What kind of decorative items/ornaments do you have on display?
Dream catcher with peacock feathers, crystals of all sizes, faeries, gnomes, leprechauns, gargoyles, a giant crystal ball, african masks, Buddha figurines, unicorns, yoda toys, african and taos indian drums seashells, tibetan singing bowl, feathers and sticks that I found that I really liked and a big replica of the enterprise from star trek that you can keep cd's in, what else?! lol

21. Any photos on display?
Just one picture of my mom eating a hamburger that's in a nice frame that says "I do believe in faeries". Otherwise, no.

22. What feature in your home is likely to get your guests' attention first?
Little piles of books that I'm reading/looking at (like art or nature books) everywhere and all the purple and wicker, maybe the blanket spread on the floor with whatever painting I'm working on top of it. (I paint on a blanket I got at a powwow)

23. What would you like to buy for your home some day?
Oooh! I would like some southwest decor. I miss seeing that kind of thing all the time when I lived in new mexico. Like some nice pine and Iron thing to set the tv and gargoyles on would be nice!

24. Any plants or flowers in your home?
Just the masses of trees around the balcony. We don't get enough light because the woods are so thick, so plants are out.

25. What are you most embarrassed about your home?
I am a slob. I am too tired after work to clean and it just doesn't bother me. I know it should... but oh well.

8. Where do you store your vacuum cleaner?

9. Are you satisfied with your home decor?

10. Is there anything in your home that needs a bit of doing up?
Yes, the gardens outside need the loving care of someone not cursed with a black thumb.

The stuff on the walls is mostly not of my choosing, but where I've had my own way, it's framed prints and posters.

12. Do you make your bed every morning?
No. There's usually a cat still snoozing there who'd resent being rousted.

13. What do you have in your bathroom cupboard?
Band aids, first aid stuff, surplus contact lenses.

14. What do you keep in the cupboard underneath the washbasin?
I have a pedestal sink, but the cupboard next to it has makeup, toiletries & handtowels.

Milk, eggs, carrots & celery.

17. What is your bed like?
Queen-size, rumpled, at least eight pillows.

18. What kind of curtains/drapes do you have?
Nasty leftovers from my mother-in-law that were meant to give us a bit of privacy until we chose proper ones. That was back in 1996, but they're still here...

Magnets, school pictures of my friends' children.

22. What feature in your home is likely to get your guests' attention first?
The cats. They're aggressively charming.

23. What would you like to buy for your home some day?
Central air conditioning system. Summers here are wicked humid and the dampness lingers all year long.

24. Any plants or flowers in your home?
Husband's cacti; I have an enormous aloe plant that my sister divided from my mother's 30-year-old monster aloe. Also, a sweet potato vine that has resisted all my attempts to overwater it.

25. What are you most embarrassed about your home?
That it has been packed to the gills with my packrat husband's crap. We have every issue of The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Mad magazine that he has ever received.

1. When you step in through the front door into your home and look to the left, what do you see?
A closet.

2.What colour is the rug/carpet in your living room?
Dark blue.

3. When you look out of your kitchen window, what do you see?
What kitchen window? This condo could definitely use more light!

4. What items do you keep on the washbasin ledge in your toilet/bathroom?
Just soap. Everything else is stored in the cupboards.

5. What room in your home is the cosiest?
I would say my bedroom but I'm biased.

6.What is the most charming feature of your home?
I wouldn't call our home conventional. And none of the furniture matches. I like to think of it as...messy-chic?

7. What kind of home appeals to you the most? (Flat, house, terraced house...)
I love some of the 1920's spanish duplexes in LA. Something not too large, with a nice garden/patio area would be ideal.

8. Where do you store your vacuum cleaner?
The second story closet.

9. Are you satisfied with your home decor?
No. There's a serious lack of decor and organization. Our living room functions mostly as a space for my sister to play her guitar and work on her art class projects. Our dining room table has been converted into my school research space. We eat at the computer desk. But it somehow works for us.

10. Is there anything in your home that needs a bit of doing up?
Where should I start? Haha.

11. Do you have more posters or more framed pictures/paintings on your walls?
The walls are bare. But as soon as I get a proper frame, my poster from the LA show is going up.

12. Do you make your bed every morning?
No.

13. What do you have in your bathroom cupboard?
Toothbrushes, toothpaste.

14. What do you keep in the cupboard underneath the washbasin?
Cleaning supplies.

15. What do you have in your pantry/food cupboard?
Dry pasta, olive oil, all-purpose flour.

16.What do you always have in your fridge?
Silk soy milk and some type of juice.

17. What is your bed like?
Full size.

18. What kind of curtains/drapes do you have?
Vertical blinds throughout the house.

19. What do you have on your fridge door?
Magnets, recipes, take-out menus.

20. What kind of decorative items/ornaments do you have on display?
None, really. We just have a ton of books and magazines everywhere.

21. Any photos on display?
My sister has a few of me and her friends in her room.

22. What feature in your home is likely to get your guests' attention first?
My theremin that I have set up in the living room.

23. What would you like to buy for your home some day?
I don't know. Maybe a wall mural to have downstairs?

24. Any plants or flowers in your home?
Not usually.

25. What are you most embarrassed about your home?
It's pretty plain. I'd like it to be more warm and inviting but technically, it's my father's house so I haven't been involved in any decorating.

I've taken a lot of photos of our house so family and friends overseas can see, so I'm going to illustrate this post. ;) A lot of the photos are of the house as we were moving in or still working on stuff. I need to get a few more photos done now that it's almost complete. The whole set can be seen here.

1. When you step in through the front door into your home and look to the left, what do you see?
A wall, but it's got some fun old-fashioned advertising prints on it:
Image

2.What colour is the rug/carpet in your living room?
hardwood floors with a multicolor rug from Ikea
Image

3. When you look out of your kitchen window, what do you see?
Our kitchen is half windows, which look out onto our tiny back garden, which houses a bike and the dog crate and little else
Image

4. What items do you keep on the washbasin ledge in your toilet/bathroom?
Nothing on the ledge, as the sink is tiny, but there's a ledge over it that holds cups with my makeup brushes and our toothbrushes, a small bowl that holds my earrings, and my contact lens case

5. What room in your home is the cosiest?
I like our living room, but our guest room on the top floor is kind of cozy, what with the sloping roof:
Image

6.What is the most charming feature of your home?
The old cast-iron furnace is pretty charming
Image

7. What kind of home appeals to you the most? (Flat, house, terraced house...)
Our last house, which was surrounded by land and trees was probably my favorite, especially since it was a somewhat modern design, too.

8. Where do you store your vacuum cleaner?
In a cupboard in the office

9. Are you satisfied with your home decor?
Overall, yes. We got to start from scratch with this house, so we were able to buy pieces that went together and matched our aesthetic.

10. Is there anything in your home that needs a bit of doing up?
The upstairs laundry room needs a good coat of paint and a bit of organizing, and I'd like to change the cabinets and counter in the kitchen.

11. Do you have more posters or more framed pictures/paintings on your walls?
Framed pictures and paintings with a decorative painting on a wall, too. Most of the artwork we've got is my work or that of a friend. I have plans for more, but haven't gotten around to it all yet.
Image

12. Do you make your bed every morning?
I try to, but there's usually a dog in it.
Image
Image

13. What do you have in your bathroom cupboard?
Saline solution, contacts, hair spray, talc, hair pins

14. What do you keep in the cupboard underneath the washbasin?
Don't have one, unfortunately. No room.
Image

15. What do you have in your pantry/food cupboard?
Not enough cupboard space for a dedicated cabinet, but generally, spices, oils, flour, cocoa powder, sugar, cornmeal, and such ...

16.What do you always have in your fridge?
beer, coke, cheese, milk, olives

17. What is your bed like?
Comfy and with clean lines (this is a before picture of the rest of the room)
Image

18. What kind of curtains/drapes do you have?
Wood blinds in the bedroom, and decorative panels in the dining room
Image

19. What do you have on your fridge door?
Another door. The fridge is kind of built into the cabinets, so it's got a cabinet door over it.
Image

20. What kind of decorative items/ornaments do you have on display?
Not much. I like to keep things fairly minimal. I have various bowls and animals on display, it seems. I decorate with black cats. ;)
Image

21. Any photos on display?
A few, including an old one of my grandfather, a picture of my best friends and I when we graduated university, and a couple of my boyfriend.

22. What feature in your home is likely to get your guests' attention first?
The big orange wall and yellow sofa
Image

23. What would you like to buy for your home some day?
A fan for this summer, probably!

24. Any plants or flowers in your home?
Only a small parsley plant, which is basically there for one of the cats to chew on. Between the cats eating the plants and me killing them, I don't usually bother.

25. What are you most embarrassed about your home?
The mess the two cats and large dog make. Kibble and cat litter and fur, oh my!
