Oh! Cookies!! I'd completely forgotten that you US types don't call biscuits biscuits! That put's a whole different spin on the whole "is it a biscuit?'/'a really big biscuit?' scene with Murray in season one - That conversation must've sounded even more bizarre to you guys than it did to us!

I don't know what the kiwi outlook is on this, but in Britain we call things like digestives and bourbons and all that biscuits but call the American style chocolate chip thingies cookies.

Cookies are always referred to as biscuits in NZ regardless of the type, although there is a company that markets itself as Cookie Time. Judging by the mascot, it's targeting the munchies demographic. Check out the eyes, he's clearly whacked off.

I don't know if we do everywhere. I think a cookie would still be a biscuit in a lot of the UK.

I've heard the American expression "biscuits and gravy"...whats biscuit in that context?

Oh yeah I nearly forgot - we do have biscuits that aren't dog food - they are these big honkin' doughy things: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/110/2732 ... a96c12.jpg - What do you kiwis and Brits call them?

Maybe calling some biscuits cookies is regional in the UK? I know where I was (Brighton) I was looking for chocolate chip cookie mix and was laughed at by my host family for calling them cookies. When I made them I was told that they were "lovely" which isn't a word Americans would normally use to describe food and it made me laugh, but I like it. :) In fact, lovely is my favorite word and I try to use it as often as possible.

And since Spune mentioned it, why the flup are digestives called digestives? It sounds so clinical and unappetizing, like it's medicine for an upset stomach. I liked them alot though, they are kind of like graham crackers only more addicting. Not surprisingly, I grew quite fond of the ones with chocolate on the one side.

LOL.

umm...we do have scones and they are different from biscuits (though they do look similar). Don't know how to describe the difference exactly except to say that biscuits don't come in flavors like some scones do and they are butterier...or something...

I thought cookies were softer, with biscuits being more crunchy! Argh! I come back to find another of my addicitons being broken down into sub-sections.

Ep 4 was quite good, I'm getting worried about the amount of the others singing. Bret and Jemaine please. Wonder when Choir of Ex-Girlfriends will pop up. :hrm:

For the biscuit/cookie question: In the US, biscuits are soft, kind of like a homemade roll, cookies can be soft and chewy, or crispy and crunchy. Here's a couple of pics of biscuits:

Hope that helps.

Do you guys have Kentucky Fried Chicken in the UK? If you do and the menu is like ours they serve biscuits with pretty much everything and be sure you have a beverage nearby coz those suckers are not likely to go down easily without one. :D

U.S. biscuits are made from self-rising flour, shortening, and milk. They are quite plain by themselves but delicious with jam or honey or gravy. I make very, very good biscuits. I'm rather famous for them. We went to a restaurant owned by a southern chef, one who was on Top Chef (u.s. cooking competition) and my biscuits were better than those he served in his restaurant.
