Poor audio mix?

Postby charks » Wed Feb 11, 2009 7:16 pm

Hey folks...big fan and first time poster. (and it's my birthday!!)

Absolutely loving season 2...but has anyone else noticed that the vocals seem to be mixed really low compared to the music? It's very noticeable when the show moves from spoken dialogue to the song. Never noticed this in Season 1.

I dunno...my wife notices it as well...as have a few of my friends. Regardless...I always re-watch each episode about a half dozen times just to catch all the lyrics!

Happy Birthday!

I don't have HBO, so I can't comment on that, BUT on the season one DVD I have, the spoken parts are definitely quieter than the songs. The kids are usually in bed when I watch it and I have to keep turning it up to hear the dialogue and then turning it down again when the songs come on.

Hey Charks! Welcome! And Happy Belated Birthday.
I think something is definitely off with the mix this season - the opening is all bass, with the guitar (which has the melody) much harder to hear compared to last year. And when Bret's singing in Episode 2 (I don't want to post any spoiler details here) there's a point where there's a major shift in the volume, or as you put it, a poor audio mix.

I love putting on closed caption to catch all the lyrics, it really helps. :D

The songs are mixed low in the S1 DVD, it's pretty obvious and weird.

I noticed the new opening sequence in S2 seems to crackle and break up a bit.

I've asked someone who might be able to shed some light. Of course, he might not, but I thought I'd mention it and see if there is something to this.

I've had a few emails on this also, so you are not the only ones to be thinking this.

Hopefully when it finally is broadcast in Blighty the sound will be spot on.

Well I have to have some reward for being a good girl and waiting to watch in on telly. :halo:

So JB says of the audio

We've had no problem with the sound here in the audio mix. And when I watch at home it seems fine. So not sure what that is. Sometimes people may have a 5.1 surround system and not have the correct settings - the vocals are L and R channel - not centre - but other than that cannot think what it might be. Unless its a local cable provider issue - but then HBO would know about that I think...so a mystery.

Does this seem to explain?

I'm not using a home theater system...just the speakers of the TV. Maybe it is a local cable issue (Cox cable)...but I haven't noticed any other audio problems with other HBO series/films. It's just a minor nuisance having to turn my TV up during the songs...then back down after.

I appreciate you looking into this!

No home theater here, either, just the good old tv and Verizon Fios. I don't seem to notice it constantly, just certain places in songs and instrumentals, seems more like a balance of instruments-to-voice issue as opposed to tv volume.

No home theater either but as someone else said, I've had no other sound problems with any other shows.
