I've been watching Short Poppies over the past week. I'm a little over half way through the series. For those who don't know, each episode is about a person - a short poppy - who is featured by documentarian David Farrier. As a side note, I remember Jemaine and Bret saying they were worried about being victims of the tall poppy syndrome if they became too popular. So this is about regular people who live in a town in New Zealand. Each central character is played by Rhys.
It's really fun to see Rhys transform himself each episode. When the episodes start, you're like, "Oh yeah, that's Rhys and he looks/sounds like the last guy." But before long you get into it and 'get' the character. Actually, I've been most impressed seeing Rhys play women. I'd say my 2 favourite episodes so far are when he plays women - he develops all these physical mannerisms and really pulls it off!
The episodes are mostly cute. There a few laughs here and there. Some of the characters are a little sad. It's interesting too because there are actors who are in all (or nearly) episodes but they play different characters. Others are recurring characters in each episode. And then in some episodes, there are really well known actors, like David Merchant in the trailer, Sam Neil, and that survival guy Bear or something.
All in all I'd say it's an interesting project and a really nice way to spend half an hour! Enjoy!
