I'm late to the party, but..

Hel - Prisint! :D

I bought my uke a few weeks ago at a festival, and I love it!
I've had a uke jamming session with a couple of friends who've been playing for years, and on Monday night went along to the Balmain Ukulele Klub in Sydney, which was awesome.

I'm absolutely hooked (why did it take me so long??), and am in the market to buy a quality uke (any recommendations? not a Sanchez  )

:yay: Go hel!

How much are you willing to spend? Solid mahogany ukes are usually of good quality. Kalas, Makalas and Mahalos seem to be popular types of ukes amongst forum members. I've heard good things about Lanikais which tend to be more expensive from what I've seen.

Well, after doing a bit of research (and after holding some lovely ukes owned by my friends*), I'm resigned to the fact that I'll probably be spending over $150, and possibly over $200 for something really lovely. I do think I'll be satisfied with just the one if I get a nice one, so I might as well splash out a bit.

I was looking at solid mahogany Kala tenor with Aquila strings in a shop, and that was gorgeous (obviously), but also $365, so I'm still looking.....

I'm pretty sure I want a concert size uke, but they actually seem to be a little rarer that sopranos. Is that something other people have found?

* my friend Felicite has an adoble little Koa wood soprano which is nearly 100 years old. I kid you not. She plays it all the time, but you should see the look on her face when someone else is holding it. It's obviously her baby

Hel, take a look at what musicguymic has on Ebay. Solid mahogany, Aquila strings, lovely sound, and a reputable person who sells several types of ukes for under $100. A shop only marks way up. Once you know what you want from a shop, check it out online for the best price.

HELGECKO!!!! :woohoo: I'm so glad you are in the band, finally!!!! Squeeee! It is so fun to hear the excitement and joy from another ukelele convert! I have a concert, and I love him. I too have a hard time seeing him in anybody else's arms. :x I'm at work right now but there is a lovely photo of Bret with a fan who is holding his amazing 6 string beauty, and Bret has a firm grip on it all the while. 8)

Anyway congrats, I'm so happy for you and I can't wait to see your first video. :eyelashes:

Ha! What a great picture! I love the way he still has one hand protectively on it, lol. He looks like I used to look when anybody would hold my first baby, hee hee! "I am letting you hold him but I am totally ready to snatch him away from you at the slightest provocation," lol. ;)

Helgecko I LOVE that picture you posted. I can't wait to see a YouTube video! (hint hint)

And you know what? I so know how he feels...
"what? hold it....? uh..... sure, sure.... here you go. What? no, I'm not still holding it, I'm just.... my hand's just resting there naturally..."

I've put pics of my new baby-I-mean-uke in the Welcome To thread

Um, SuzyBatt? Present! Uke? PRESENT!! Yes, I got a uke as a present!!! Yay, I'm so happy!!!

I have no idea if it's any good or not, or how much time I'll have to devote to it, but it'll always be there when I need it, right? It's a Beaver Creek and it's black. Hubby, who was the gifter, already rolled his eyes when I told him I'd have to have it re-strung. Anyway, I'm babbling. Just wanted to share the good news. Oh, and I haven't named 'him' yet.

Yippee!! :whitey:

Yay, Suzy and Amanda! Hey, I started a thread in the General section so folks could share what they got for Christmas. If you get ukes or uke-related gifts, tell us all about them!
