This may really be happening! :D :roll2: :D

'Flight of the Conchords' star Bret McKenzie may join 'The Hobbit'
by Josh Rottenberg

When stories began cropping up on the web this morning claiming director Peter Jackson wanted Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie in The Hobbit, some undoubtedly looked at the calendar and assumed it was an April Fool’s joke. Well, it’s no joke — EW has confirmed that McKenzie may be joining The Hobbit in a small role. Hardcore Lord of the Rings fans may know that McKenzie made two blink-and-you-missed-them appearances as an elf extra in The Fellowship of the Ring (during the Council of Elrond) and The Return of the King (telling Liv Tyler, “Lady Arwen, we cannot delay!”). McKenzie’s character was never named but fans dubbed him Figwit, as in, “Frodo is great — who is that?” Internet sites sprang up devoted to Figwit, and McKenzie’s wife Hannah Clarke made a short documentary in 2004 about the Figwit phenomenon. In Season 1 of Flight of the Conchords, McKenzie and co-star Jemaine Clements paid tribute to The Lord of the Rings with the song “Frodo, Don’t Wear the Ring.” The exact specifics of McKenzie’s role are not yet known, but given the unlikely Figwit following, it’s quite possible Jackson is bringing the character back as a sort of inside joke for fans.

The photo they chose to go with the article is apt, don't you think? :rolls:

Now that they've taken the April Fool's joke out of play, it sounds like it could be really happening.
Maybe they'll do a takeoff of Where's Waldo - Where's Figwit??? :roll2:
Oh, fish-like Lady
Lady-like Fish
I don't think so Bro, she's a Lady, Lady, Lady, Lady
No, no, she's a fish that's just a little bit
La-dy-ish! Yeah!

Definitely apt in its poutiness.

(Can they never get Jemaine's name right?? If they aren't adding an R in his first, they're tacking on an S to his last name.)

I hope PJ gives him a bit more to do than just a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to hardcore fans....whomever they might be......

That interview was hilarious. Wasn't Larry Pritchard some kind of community alter ego between Bret, Jemaine and Taika?

What a memory, Mock! I think it was Taika's alter ego.
But if you did I'd hold you tight / Into every single night
And we'd fall asleep together / And we'd wake up in the sunlight
Well, maybe I'm a dreamer / But maybe one day you'll see / That dreams are...

I guess LarryP could have been either Taika or Jemaine. I would love to know.

The internets are giving this story lots of love. And while I anxiously await some real news...I'm quite enjoying the wide array of accompanying photos. I liked this one. :)

 Yes, it's all very ironic and so intricately woven into this fansite/forum. It's cool that most of the stories "get it" that the fans that started the whole Figwit phenomenon were taking the piss. They could have gone the other way with it. (squirms a bit recalling the Scottish Fellowship) B & J certainly are no strangers to subtle nods to the true fans...I'm thinking of the bus drivers song episode in the HBO series. Though I'm actually sort of astounded at the apparent vastness of Figwit's continued notoriety. If it happens, it won't be as much of an inside joke as perhaps Peter Jackson thought.

Oh, I hope Bret does it.

And I hope all this doesn't fire up Jemaine's LOTR envy. :roll2:

:rolls: :rolls: :rolls: Thanks for that, LauraK! What was that? Some kind of promo leading up to Edinburgh? Taika went along for the Humorbeasts, right? It seems like the Figwit interview posted above was right around that time as well. I wonder if the interview was an exclusive for the figwitlives website or just something they did as a lark on their own.

Hey, Bret (looking very Video Kid btw) mentioned the song 'You Don't Love me Anymore'! :D So that 'new song' was really an old one. Interesting.

Sheesh, how many stories are there about how the Flight of the Conchords got started??!? :roll2:

I remember someone else mentioning about Bret mentioning YDLMA in this back when they toured last year.....

They're grateful for being part of Larry's "stable, if you like." :waggle:

I can see now that FOTC really was kind of a lark for them in the beginning, just music/comedy and presenting it in different ways (NZ tv, clubs, Fringe, etc) and being silly and having fun with it and then it got more popular and more popular and it got them noticed and got them an HBO special and then a tv show and tours and a huge fanbase and then expectations of more....when they never imagined it becoming so.

So I can see them wanting some distance. But.......well. We all know what I want to say but I won't as I'm already well off topic. :D

I'm hoping Bret takes on Figwit again. And I REALLY hope that in the film, someone calles to him thusly: "Figwit! Remove your robe and allow Bilbo to warm himself after his journey..." (or something like that.) ;)

When Larry P first came up in conversation here, we saw the video for the first time, and we remarked how Larry looked soooo much like Taika - Duh!!!

Love the Bret pointy ears photo.

Jemwit: "Well that was rude of Arwen. What's her problem anyway.........Arwen."

Heehee, that's so funny LauraK. Though your scandalous dialog scene for Figwit is just wrong. :hrmpf: I mean elf porn is a perfectly acceptable perversion, but HOBBIT porn?!?!?!? :wag:

Besides I'm sure I read somewhere (figwitlives and the back of a trading card) that Figwit's real name is Aegnor; who was the only male elf to ever fall in love with a mortal woman. :D

Image

(of course everyone who has read any elf porn...er I mean fan fiction knows that Figwit's real name is Melpomaen) :geek:

Lol, no....Bilbo is well and truly covered with Figwits robe, and warming himself by the fire while Figwit is revealed to us in all his elven glory!
(He is an Escort, after all...)

*"Rivendell Elven Escort Services, how may I help you?"

*"Yes, I'm in need of an escort for tonight. Tall, long hair, gorgeous complexion, pouty lips, doe eyes...."

*"Oh, I have the perfect candidate! He's just returned to us after a long absence so I'm sure he'll be eager to please."
