Eltham celebrates Predicament premiere

People in the small Taranaki town of Eltham are celebrating as Predicament premieres in Hawera tonight.

At the Eltham Town Hall they have props from the film; everything from a very authentic jailhouse to Jemaine Clements' costume.

A lot of the movie's blackmailing and plotting took place in a phone booth which had now been gifted to the man who owns most of the street where the action was shot.

"It's sort of a goodwill gesture and I'm going to look after it for them and I'll make sure it's on display," said John Burling, who let the crew paint five of his shops to use in the movie.

The filming last year brought a buzz to the tiny Taranaki town and while things were pretty much back to normal now, they had not forgotten the glamour of having stars such as Jermaine Clement in their midst.

And for one young extra who was plucked from drama class at Hawera High School, the film was the experience of a lifetime.

Mitchell Careswell, who plays "Cheeky Boy 2" described the experience as "wicked".

Even for those not directly involved, the film made a big impression, with locals wrapping up and braving the cold to watch the night shoots.

"It's been fantastic for Eltham," said Four Square's Shaun McCarthy. "It's brought a lot more foot traffic to town, a lot more business, a lot more excitement to the town. It's really lifted the morale of people in Eltham."

Hawera becomes tinseltown for film

PRETTY PICTURE: Actress Rose McIver arrives in a vintage car at the Predicament film premiere and smiles for the cameras.

Months of waiting finally came to an end as the film's stars joined the locals to enjoy the film at the charity gala premiere.

Arriving in vintage cars fitting for the film's 1930s setting, the stars were then mixed and mingled at the pre-party in a marquee outside Cinema 2.

Inside both theatres were linked for those attending to hear speeches before the screenings.

Director Jason Stutter apologised for Jemaine Clement (of Flight of the Conchords) and Tim Finn who could not make it.

But Stutter decided to phone him anyway, despite it being the wee small hours in New York.

Although bleary from an interrupted sleep, Clement still made the audience laugh, just as he did almost every time he spoke throughout the film.

Stutter said he was rapt to have been able create the Predicament film to match the book and in the home town of its author, Ronald Hugh Morrieson.

"He sat in his home in Hawera, dreamed up this story that he struggled to get published and now it's going to Hollywood. It's a shame he can't be here to see everyone loving his work."

Co-producer Vincent Burke congratulated Taranaki for putting up money and hosting the film and he acknowledged Morrieson for being the only New Zealand author who has had every novel written made into a film.

"It was so important to have it filmed where he lived and wrote it," he said.

Producer Sue Rogers said loved being back in Taranaki.

"This is its launch and hopefully lots of people in New Zealand want to see it. The event, the team here is world class."

Predicament is due to be released into cinemas nationwide on Thursday.

Me too! And I simply adore the fact that Jemaine is the kind of friend that Jason knew he could call in the middle of the night. You can't have too many of them. :heartbeat:

In a couple of weeks. Sorry!
Um, well... I'm at my brother's house now... he gave me a DVD of the programme he'd recorded - and it turns out TVNZ had screened an episode differing from the one advertised without bothering to inform anybody about it. :###: So, right programme, wrong episode. :? No Jemaine. Sorry guys... :(

A few video clips can be found on NZ On Screen's Predicament Page. Clip 2 is a new excerpt from the film and Clip 4 is an interview with Jemaine. :)

Oh oh!
Found this in the Business Herald Media section:

The relevant bit is down a bit so I'll copy/paste it here....

BUSINESS TIME
Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement may have a cult appeal.
But that was not enough to overcome dismal box office takings for Predicament, the latest feature film backed by the New Zealand Film Commission and New Zealand On Air.
Predicament was made with a budget of around $6 million - with contributions from private investors.
By yesterday it had grossed $137,758 after three weeks.
Second-week takings were down 71 per cent, prompting leading film industry veteran Philip Wakefield of OnFilm magazine to note the movie was likely to come in below The Vintner's Luck, the other box office disaster of the past 12 months, which earned just $193,204.
New Zealand Film Commission chief executive Graeme Mason was diplomatic and said nice things about the movie. Predicament was approved under a previous regime but the result is timely in the wake of the Peter Jackson/David Court report which calls for changes to the way the commission is run.

I knew it wasn't going to be a massive hit, but I didn't expect 'dismal' - it's still a ripping yarn!

Oh no! I can't believe it, it looks like such a great movie! Wow that's a really terrible gross earning. What happened?
