Though it's one of the few specialty titles out there without Oscar nominations tied to it, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's "What We Do In The Shadows" had a very nice weekend anyway. Distributed by Unison Films in association with Paladin, the film went from 2 to 16 theaters in its second weekend and jumped 116%, grossing $142,000 for a $8,875 per-theater-average. Its total now stands at $236,000 a week before rolling out to the top 25 markets.
Fingers crossed! I really hope you able to go a screening at a convenient time, Diah. It's been a long time coming but it's worth the wait.
"What We Do in the Shadows" (Unison/Paladin) Week 3
$262,890 in 46 theaters (+30); Cumulative: $537,000
This New Zealand vampire rom-com continues to expand, and expand well. With nearly three times as many theaters this continues with a decent ($5,000+) PSA and looks headed for an unexpected gross considerably over $1 million. 35 new markets come on board this week.
Finally, one of the few specialty holdovers titles out there without Oscar tied to it -- Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's "What We Do In The Shadows" -- had a very nice third weekend. Distributed by Unison Films in association with Paladin, the film went from 16 to 46 theaters in its second weekend and jumped 105%, grossing $263,000 for a $5,717 per-theater-average. Its total now stands at $537,000 and it looks like it's becoming one of 2015's few indie breakouts so far.
