Once again, wonderful account of the show, Venus. Again, it sounds like it was a lot of fun. You know, the shorter show could have been for a multitude of reasons, from receptions set up by management (which could be totally out of their control) to one of the guys getting vocally tired and unable to do lots more. Especially if they cut out encores, there could be lots of possible explanations for not doing them. The interesting thing will be seeing if this was a onetime thing, or if more shows in the future will have fewer encores. Hopefully not.
Oh, fish-like Lady
I don't think so Bro, she's a Lady, Lady, Lady, Lady
No, no, she's a fish that's just a little bit
Yes, there are a variety of possible reasons as to why they played a shorter set but I honestly didn't see it as a big deal because it still was a pretty full set. Those of us who went to previous gigs were just a little spoilt by the gigs lasting for over 2 hours with longer encores. Yeah it will be interesting to see the length of the other shows but I think this may have been a one-off.
I just added the part when Bret said Nigel's cello was getting all up in his grill during We're Both In Love With A Sexy Lady. I found that quite amusing.
I'd love to see a close up video of Woo a lady too, Laura. I don't know if Bret was looking directly at me but as I said, he was definitely looking in my direction. I wasn't expecting to have eye contact with Bret since I was quite far out on Jemaine's side. He looked as though he was kinda staring at me so I thought he was staring into space and day dreaming or something. It was cute though.
I'd love to see a close up of Woo too. I wish I had recorded it when I saw them but on the first night they told us not to & I didn't think I could get away with it without them seeing. I guess I just forgot on the 2nd night. I think my fave bit is when Jemaine sings "I'm wooing you" like he needed to explain what he was doing or else the woo-ie wouldn't get it.
Haha yes, I should be thinking about it in that way, Laura.
Yeah, hopefully a good video of Woo will be uploaded soon cos it's such a good song.
Another small thing I remember which I've added to my post: Whilst they were talking about whales calling up emergency services, Bret mimicked a sort of cockney accent and renacted a phone call to emergency services and was like “’Allo, emergency services?â€. Jemaine put on an English accent and pretended to be the call operator and said “Which emergency service would you like or would you like a lucky dip?†which got a big laugh from the crowd.
I waited outside the Apollo keeping an eye on the stage door with minilea and Rachel. At first there were over 20 fans who waited for over an hour but then that dwindled to about 10 fans since I suppose people had to catch the last train etc.
Arj was the first to come out after about 2 hours. He said, "Good to see it's all ladies out here tonight" but he failed to see the only guy there so he apologised and said "oh sorry, I didn't see you there." He then hung around to talk to all of us. Rachel summed up our encounter with Arj pretty well. He talked about the after party that was going on backstage which he wasn't impressed with and just described it as a gathering of old friends and said that we were more interesting. He also talked about seeing Jude Law backstage and commented on how good looking he is, "No homo but he's so dreamy!" We then discussed Jude Law and Sienna Miller's relationship status. We talked about the show and he compared our crowd with the previous night's audience. He asked if we were attending any more shows (I guess he's used to seeing fans attending multiple shows!) so I met a girl who will be sitting in the same section as me and will also be seated in the front row for the May 25th show.
Other than Rachel and minilea, I got to speak to a couple of other fans who were waiting for a meet and greet. There were a few fans from the US who had been to the show the night before and waited for a meet and greet which didn't happen so they were quite anxious for a meet and greet this time round. I have to say that a couple of the people who were waiting around looked quite familiar because I think I've seen them in photos with Bret and Jemaine whilst they were touring the US. They were very friendly and seemed like a very dedicated bunch. Whilst we were talking to Arj, a car drove past with Matt inside who waved. One girl was sure it was Jemaine so she was quite worried that he had just left but a few of us reassured her that it was Matt (further evidence that Matt is channelling Jemaine and is now even deceiving fans ).
After he finished talking to us as a group, I walked over to Arj with minilea. I shook his hand and introduced myself. He was incredibly friendly and I liked the way he crouched down a little to ask what my name was. We took a photo and then I asked him to sign my FOTC S1 DVD. He asked me to spell out my name and thought I said 'B' instead of 'V' so he paused and said, something like, "it's okay, I'll write something else" so he wrote "Be well", wrote my name on top of it to me and signed his autograph. When Rachel asked Arj to sign her uke he said, "I better not mess this one up". He was very patient with all of us and took photos with everyone and we managed to get a group one with him before he left in a taxi. He told us on a few occasions including just before he left that he was unsure whether Bret and Jemaine were going to come out or not and we told him that it was okay and we enjoyed his company.
Bret, Jemaine and Nigel came out not too long after Arj left. Bret and Nigel came towards our side first and that's when Rachel asked them to sign her uke which led to them taking turns to play it. When Nigel first started playing Rachel's uke, Jemaine shouted over to Nigel something like "Sing a song, Nigel". Here's the YouTube video again:
After that, I spoke to Nigel first. I asked him to sign my WIUO- The Dreaming EP. He opened the CD case to take the booklet out and seemed quite touched that I had the CD. He asked me where I got it from and I said Amplifier. He took out the booklet and signed his autograph near one of the pictures in the booklet. Another fan next to me and I told him how much we enjoyed the CD. I then told him that it would be great if he could perform with the other members of the ukulele orchestra here. I wasn't expecting to hear that they actually had plans to perform in the UK in June for 'Toast' which he described as a New Zealand Festival which takes place in London where everyone practically gets drunk. Their flight was going to be sponsored but the company sponsoring them pulled out so they can't make it anymore which is a shame. I also told him that WIUO inspired me to learn to play the uke and he was like "aww, that's great" and we talked about ukuleles becoming more and more popular. Nigel was so nice and very easy to talk to. We even talked about the Apollo's marquee. He found it quite amusing that FOTC had their name in lights in the marquee but the rest of the building was covered with huge posters of Ricky Gervais. We laughed and agreed cos I was looking forward to hopefully seeing huge posters of Bret and Jemaine on the Apollo but there weren't. I took a photo with him, thanked him and then moved on to Bret.
Bret signed my FOTC S1 DVD and I decided to ask whether there was any chance of a live tour DVD. He paused and said "No, you've seen it all live now!" quite animatedly throwing his arms around (aww!). I have to say that I'm still not fully convinced for some reason but maybe that's just my wishful thinking. I took a photo with him and then took a pic of him with minilea. Minilea told him that she came from Manchester and knew she had a long drive home asked whether I was from Manchester but I told him that I live in London. Afterwards, I asked him to sign my Video Kid CD. When he saw it, he said "Oh, wow" and signed it as follows:
I asked him whether he has any plans to release any more solo material and he said that he didn't know but he may do. I told him that I'll look forward to whatever he does next so he smiled and said something along the lines of "Yes, I'll be around doing stuff!" with a big grin on his face. So sweet!
Unfortunately, I didn't get to spend that much time with Jemaine but it was okay cos I was able to speak to him more in Birmingham whilst I previously didn't get a chance to speak to Nigel and only spoke to Bret briefly last time round. Minilea and I walked over to him just as their tour manager was actually going to take him away but he told her that he hadn't spoken to us yet so he made sure that we got his autograph and had our pictures taken with him. I asked him to sign my Season 1 DVD. After he signed his autograph, he pointed to the image of himself on the DVD cover and said "that's me!" and wrote that next to it on the cover with an arrow. Whilst he was signing it I said "great show tonight" to which he replied "oh, thank you." I asked for a picture which minilea took and thanked him.
(Rhys is the one who drew the "meetings" thought bubble coming out of Jemaine's head & signed it last summer after one of his shows)
Yet again, it was another incredible night filled with much joy and laughter. I had a blast during the gig and I'm so happy that I was able to meet them after both of the shows I've attended so far. It was totally worth missing the last train home for! I can't praise them enough for being so considerate towards fans and generous with their time. I'm really looking forward seeing them again live from the front row at the Wembley gig next week.
Love it! Reading your write up Venus makes me grin again, just as big I did all the way home! I adore the guys for the time they spent with us all and the amount of effort they made. If I can find a decent Wembly ticket then I'll do it all again, with it being the last uk gig!
