Isn't it great. I love how the anklebiters are running crazy circles around their aunties and nana's. What's best is they are imitating the movements and they even have the chorus down pat. I loved meeting the club member's and getting a little bit of the background on the song. I'm so glad that they are getting the recognition, it means so much to them and to NZ.

From 1979-2001 I spent so much time in Hawaii. I haven't been back for awhile and I miss it so much. I have never held a place so close to my heart. It has always felt like home to me. This video reminds me of the hawaiian people. They also struggle to pass down their traditions & culture to the younger generation and make sure that it lives on. If you have ever heard Bruddah Iz (Israel Kamakawiwoole), he has a song called Hawaii '78 & Hawaiian Supa'Man & it really tells the story. He was very touching and political in many of his songs. I think a lot of people know him from his cover of Over the Rainbow but that isnt at all who he is or what he's about. Anyway, sorry didn't mean to get so off topic...

Thanks so much for sharing the link, 4ever! It was very interesting listening to the history of the song and how much the song and their traditions mean to them. Great performance too! :)

(Just moved this to the Taika section as it indirectly relates to him and the movie BOY :) )

Thanks for posting, 4ever :D

I read the story behind Poi E while learning the song on the uke and it is very fascinating. I especially like the fact that it was composed on a ukulele  The lyrics are supposed to guide young Maori through the perils of modern society, and the poi is symbolic of the twirling emotions they have to deal with being stood with one foot in traditional Maori culture and one in modern (particularly) city life.
